Sadly Terry Leaman died on Monday 27th February 2023. Terry had been very active with all of his interests right up until the time that he died, and many of these interests are reflected on his website. Terry is sadly missed by all who knew him, and his local knowledge is irreplaceable. His website will remain active in memory of him, but will no longer be updated.

WELCOME TO MY WORLD

Hello, I'm Terry Leaman and I'd like to welcome you to my web site.

I live in TORQUAY, in the County of Devon, which is in the South West of England.

In this part of Devon we have our own micro climate and are able to grow, quite successfuly, the Torbay Palm (Cordyline Australis) this one was photographed on Babbacombe Downs on 15th Sept 2004

My main hobbies are Genealogy and local history. You will find links at the bottom of the page that will take you to my Family pages- the LEAMAN family from Widecombe in the Moor and Torquay, and my maternal family of HOOPER from Exbourne and Torquay.

There are various pertinent entries from 19th & 20th Century directories, for Torquay, St Mary Church, Cockington etc. Plus an Index to the 1861 census for the Parish of St Mary Church

You will also find photos and information on my home town of TORQUAY in glorious South Devon, plus some earlier photos from my collection will help give you an idea of what the town was like in the late 1800's and early 1900's

There is also a collection of links to other sites both for genealogy and more information about Devon and Torquay in Particular.

A recently compiled listing, the result of 15 years research by two of our local historians, of World War 2 Military and Civilian dead from Torquay, the military names have been engraved onto new panels which are affixed to the Cenotaph that stands in Princess Gardens, on the sea front. If you know of anyone not listed, but who should be, please let me know at the e-mail address below.

I feel very honoured to be allowed to publish these names on to my web site- please respect the copyright.

I hope you enjoy your visit, if you think you connect with any of the families mentioned, you just want to know something about the area or if any of the links do not appear to work please e-mail me

PLEASE NOTE (Feb 2009):- I can assure everyone that I am still alive & kicking- there are numerous results in Google saying that a Terry Leaman has died. Whilst my thoughts go out to the family involved, I can assure you it is not me.

WORLD WAR 1

A Mystery Roll of Honour from the First World War has been handed over by the War Memorials Trust to Torquay Museum for safe keeping.

Can you help to identify it or any of the people named?
